‘…every girl goes through a photography phase’ – Lost in Translation
My absolute favourite pastime while I was at university was taking photos. Pretty much the only thing I would spend my (very little) money on was film and developing. I experimented with a vintage 35mm and lots of different lomography cameras like the fisheye, and medium format faves Diana and my beloved Holga. It was sad to hear through the grapevine that the factory in China that makes Holga cameras has recently closed its doors for good and is being called ‘another casualty of the digital age‘.
“… they have now confirmed that, before giving us an opportunity to save them, they have sent all of the tooling and molds to the scrapyard.
If Holga is ever reborn, it will be from scratch; and, as the company with the most knowledge on the sales trends of these cameras, we just don’t see that happening…” – Holga Mods
Because they are essentially toy cameras and quite cheaply made, I can’t say that they last forever…SO, it looks like I now know what I want for christmas this year! The next problemo might be finding the film and who will develop it for me…my little go-to photo shop of uni days has also shut its doors.
I’ve gathered a few examples of my images from years ago…there are hundreds more I’m sure. It was also so thrilling to see the results when they were great and unexpected, but hugely disappointing when they didn’t turn out how you’d hoped.
What about you? Have you had a dearly loved hobby that has dissolved with the advancement of technology?
