Meet Adam Powell, stylist and installation artist, colour aficionado, king of creativity and someone I affectionately refer to as a best friend.
In work and in life he accepts every challenge with a positive attitude; no installation is too big or job too intimidating. He’s so cool under pressure that I’m often in awe of the final results of what he’s done, like ‘dude, you didn’t tell me you were doing THIS’. I think it helps that despite being one of the busiest stylists in Australia, he doesn’t make his life all about work. He might be shooting all week or spray painting something en masse in his backyard, but can always find time to pop down to the beach for a swim, have a drink with a friend or you know, audition for Survivor. His effervescent personality shines through in his work and naturally, his home/studio that he shares with his partner Nick, is no different. One week a wall will be decked out in jungle wallpaper, the next it’s DIY wood paneling in duck egg blue. The things we I ‘wait and see’ about, he just gets done and moves on.
I’m always inviting myself over, but this time was especially to capture it for you.
The sunroom has been converted into the bedroom, lending it a really indoor/outdoor feel.
AP: ‘My home is my sanctuary, it’s somewhere I can switch off and totally relax and feel comfortable. It’s also somewhere that I take pride in and love to entertain and have friends over, to create an atmosphere that is both interesting and warming to be in.’
The streamers left over from a large installation make the prettiest canopy above his bed. The breeze gently rustling through them plus the sounds of the ocean nearby make for sound seaside sleeps, I’m sure.
This is his palette right here, just add a pop of gold.
His home has a bit of a cave feel, but he keeps it cozy and well lit with the ambience of …37 (?) lamps!
Charm around every corner, seriously.
These two lounges meeting amidst layers of cushions with a triangular coffee table in the middle makes for the comfiest corner, just add rosé.
Adam is a fan of switching up his space on a whim; this faux stonewall is wallpaper that adds a coziness to the living room and can be easily peeled back to take down for the next style revamp.
AP: ‘I love the layering that my home has taken on and the colours I have put together. Lots of personal items that I have collected over time that have meaning and tell a story. I always dance with the idea of being a minimalist but have never managed to get there. As a child I collected frogs and my room looked like a rainforest with over 500 ornamental frogs so I guess the collecting started from a young age. Some things never change.’
These shelves were built into the hall space by one of Adam’s brothers and are home to an endless rotation of props, all colour-coded of course.
The back studio is one of my favourite spots in his home. We didn’t really have to move anything for this shot, it just happens to house a variety of painted backdrops, shapes and perspex sheets to frame the work table perfectly.
SO, who needs minimalism anyway?!
